One Page Essay Topics for The Sorrow of War January 30th 2008
1. Is destiny decided for everyone and no one can change it? Or does one have the power to create their own destiny?
2. Is Kien alive because he was selfish and never sacrificed himself for others, or was it just a lucky circumstance of events that kept Kien alive?
3. If Kien had known that Phuong still loved him after she was raped, would they have been able to re-kindle their relationship, or would things have turned out just the same?
4. Was the fact that Kien and Phong ended up back at the school where there love first started a coincidence? Or was that done purposly by the author?
5. Is the reason why Kien wrote the novel because he was guilty that he survived when no one else did?
-L.S.

One Page Essay Topic: Master Harold
In the play, Sam and Hally recall a time when they flew a kite together. How could that story be symbolic of their relationship and the relationship between blacks and whites in South Africa during the 1950's?
Keep in mind, this story was discussed twice during the play, and with two very different tones and outcomes. You may want to consider that, and compare and contrast the two instances as you talk about the symbolic meaning of the story.
