One Page Essays for 02.11.10

1. Kien makes himself cope with the fact that he will lose friends due to sacrifices, but does he coping actually work or does realizing the sacrifices intensify his regret, pain, sorrow, and failure.

2. When does Kien's war within him self start? and why?

3."Cheer up, son," the old engineer told him. "This is kid stuff. The first whistle in the war. Nothing to it."" Does this quote prelude to Kien's future war with himself?

4. Is Kiens postwar life any different from his prewar life?(include mood, tone, attitudes, atmosphere etc..)

5. Kien wishes to kill himself in the novel, but doesn't end up going through with it. What keeps him from doing it? Did he gain anything in his life from not killing himself?

6. The sorrow of war, the sorrow of the lost, and the sorrow of love, are all great predicaments that haunt Kien throughout the novel. How does each one effect him, and which one has the greatest impact on Kien's overall life (future, past, and present).
